Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is commonly known as autism.

It affects children and adults and affects how a person communicates and relates to people around them.

It is a spectrum disorder and affects different people in different ways, in varying degrees.

Some of the traits traditionally associated with autism include (but are not limited to):

  • delayed, and difficulties with, speech and language
  • difficulty making eye contact
  • difficulty with communicating
  • lack of empathy
  • difficulties in social settings
  • sensory under/over sensitivities
  • rigid thinking
  • a preference for familiarity and routines
  • intense/obsessive interests


Not all people diagnosed with autism will demonstrate all of these traits.
